Dogs
Being a responsible dog owner means ensuring your dog is registered with your Local Government, microchipped, trained, well cared for and does not create a nuisance to other members of your community.
The Town's Rangers are involved in helping people to be responsible dog owners and are responsible for enforcing the Local Laws and Acts relating to animals.
Responsible Dog Ownership
To ensure compliance with the Dog Act 1976 and for the wellbeing of the community and your animal please ensure your dog complies with the following:
- Can be effectively confined to your property
- Is held by a person who is capable of controlling the dog and on a leash not longer than 2meters whenever in a public place
- Is only permitted off-leash in designated dog exercise areas. For more information regarding dog exercise areas in the Town of Cottesloe, the Town has a Dog Exercise Map available.
- Wears a collar with the current registration tag along with an ID tag featuring the owner's contact number and address
- Is microchipped and all owner information linked to this is up to date
Registration Fees
All dogs over the age of 3 months must be registered. There is a penalty under the Dog Act 1976 of $200.00 for failing to register your dog(s)
Proof of sterilisation requires either a veterinary sterilisation certificate, or a statutory declaration, or sighting of a tattoo on the dog's ear by a Ranger.
You will need to microchip your dog before you can register them as the Town cannot accept a registration unless a dog is microchipped.
The Town must be informed immediately of any change in ownership, address, or the death of your dog.
The registration period runs from the 1st November to the 31st October each year.

Cats
Local Governments are responsible for administrating and enforcing the Cat Act 2011. Fines and penalties can apply for people who don't register, microchip and sterilise their cats.
All domestic cats aged six months and older are required by law to be;
- Registered with the relevant local government;
- Sterilised
- Micro-chipped so they can be returned to their owners if lost, stolen or straying from their owner's property; and
- Wearing a registration tag issued by the local government where the cat is registered.
The Town of Cottesloe also promotes responsible cat ownership practices and encourages that cats:
- Be kept indoors after dark
- Wear a bell on their collar to alert potential prey of their presence
- Be prevented from exhibiting "nuisance" behaviours, such as:
- Entering other people's properties
- Creating excessive noise
- Urinating, spraying, or defecating on other people's property or in public areas
- Preying on birds and other wildlife
- Fighting

Exemption from Sterilisation and Micro-chipping
If there is a health reason that prevents your cat from being sterilised or micro-chipped, documentation from your vet advising that surgery would have an adverse effect on your cat's health will be required when submitting your cat's registration.
